In August of 2002 someone callously dropped a very young kitten outside the local shelter. Elby was not yet weaned and needed to be bottle-fed. We took Elby into foster care and although we have to do the hand-feeding, it is Lady who is the primary caretaker.
Lady is a 45 pound dog who has been trying to convince the adult cats here that they are puppies and she is their mama. The cats don’t buy it…
But then Elby came along, and she doesn’t really care what her mama looks like. Lady doesn’t let any of the other dogs or cats near Elby, and has been just as sleep-deprived as we have. She guards the basket Elby sleeps in, and wakes up for every feeding and takes care of bathing this little orphan.
